Which of these are you, and what drives your IT?
Four answers. The sector you are in usually decides which regulator sets your technology requirements — and for some of these, none does.
Hedge funds, private equity and wealth managers
For FCA-authorised firms the driver is operational resilience under SYSC 15A. You identify your important business services, set an impact tolerance for each as a hard time limit rather than an aspiration, then prove it through scenario testing and a self-assessment. That has a direct consequence for infrastructure: it has to be designed to meet the tolerance you published, and the evidence has to exist before anyone asks. Firms with EU entities or EU clients meet DORA as well, either directly or through contractual demands from an in-scope counterparty. Underneath both, investor and allocator due-diligence questionnaires increasingly ask for Cyber Essentials as the baseline. Hedge funds · Private equity · Wealth management
Law firms, family offices and private households
For solicitors the accountable person is named: your COLP carries personal responsibility to the SRA for compliance failures, including the ones that start as IT problems. Client confidentiality and privileged material set the bar, so access control and a defensible audit trail matter more than headline security spend. Family offices and private households sit in an unusual position — no sector regulator, but a threat profile closer to a small bank than a small business, because the value concentrated behind one or two personal email accounts is disproportionate. In practice both groups end up at the same baseline, and Cyber Essentials is the usual place to start. Legal firms · Family offices · Private households
Clinics, dental practices and pathology labs
Healthcare carries the heaviest data obligation on this page, because patient records are special-category data under UK GDPR and attract the higher standard of protection that follows. Practices delivering NHS services also complete the Data Security and Protection Toolkit, which runs annually and must be published by 30 June; version 8 made a digital asset register of all hardware and software mandatory. The CQC and the ICO sit behind that, and a structured DSPT readiness programme for a practice typically runs 6 to 10 weeks — which is why the work belongs early in the toolkit year rather than in the weeks before the deadline. Venues, studios and AI startups
These are the sectors where no regulator writes your IT requirements, and pretending one does would be dishonest. The constraints are commercial instead. A padel club, climbing gym, indoor golf venue or boutique studio lives or dies on booking, access control, payments and connectivity working as one system — and on that system being repeatable, because site two should not be a fresh build. AI-native companies face a different pair: GPU capacity that scales without a procurement cycle, and model governance that can answer what data went in and who could reach it, which is the question enterprise buyers now ask before signing. Both groups are usually building greenfield, which is the cheapest moment to get it right. Padel · Climbing · Indoor golf · AI startups
